A drum set is exactly how it sounds, a set of drums. Typically they are arranged to be played by one player, called a drummer, who can effectively play each different drum and cymbal and percussive instrument in time and to the rhythm. A basic kit contains a bass drum that is operated with a kick pedal, a high hat that is operated similarly by the other foot, a snare drum, tom-toms and a floor tom.
One of the most important parts of a drum set is the cymbals of which there are many different designs and sizes which can create a wide variety of sounds from accents and splashes to rolling low ride cymbals that keep the rhythm much like a snare. They range in materials and quality and can easily be the most expensive part of a drum kit.
Other instruments that feature well in a drum set are tambourines, triangles, chimes, wood blocks, and cow bells though there is a wide variety of different instruments that can be used by the drummer. Custom kits are common with extra toms, cymbals, even bass drums or double bass pedals which are popular in punk and heavy metal bands.
